Being on a tilt, a negative tilt, can be extremely damaging to your emotions and thus damaging to your play. Unfortunately – or perhaps fortunately – all poker players go on negative tilts n their career. It’s more common that some of us would like to think, but what matters is not how and when it happens to you. What matters is that you develop the ability, sooner rather than later, to mitigate the damage of a tilt to your overall game.

Recognize the Tilt

How do you know when you’re on a tilt? There’s no hard and fast rule telling you what exactly constitutes a tilt. You could have one bad hand. You could have a string of bad hands…ah, that’s it. Generally, when you have two or more bad hands in a row, you can consider yourself on a negative tilt. Whether it’s bad play, or bad luck that gave you the results, two or more hands is a good indication of tilting and sign that it’s time to take a deep breath.

Emotional Control Is Paramount

Easier said than done; don’t let your emotions disrupt your play. Poker requires reason. One of the reasons why tilts are so destructive to players who don’t control them: when you’re on a tilt, you’re desperate. You start to make bets in the hope of getting lucky. With a relatively weak hand, you are likely to keep going, praying for the ‘right’ card to show up on the table. Particularly if there’s a lot of betting action, you can end up in serious trouble if you don’t fold with a mediocre hand.

So how do you regain emotional control when you know you’re on a tilt? One of the most effective moves is simply to get up and walk away. In internet poker this may or may not be easier. It depends on your general level of discipline when it comes to poker. When you’re at a casino, you may have one or two people around you who advise you that you should take a break. At home at your computer, you probably don’t have this luxury.

You need to realize that people who are upset – whether they realize it or not – don’t stay focused will probably lose all the money they brought to the table. There’s no other way to but it: you must stay focused and rational while at the poker table. If you’re not focused and rational, you need to leave the table.

Most players, and particularly good players, tilt after a bad beat or when they have a string of unlucky losses. Some players have small tilts after they win a big hand or after they have a strong of good luck that causes them to feel on edge, but these episodes are much shorter than tilts caused by losing.

Tactics to Limit Tilts

While going on tilt is natural, you need to limit them every single time they occur. While the best way is to get up and walk away from the table for a few minutes, sometimes this is easier said than done.

Other tactics to calm down start with taking deep breaths. Focus on your breathing; use something to help you. Listen to music or hum a tune to yourself. Develop a little habit that will help you refocus; it’s a tactic used by tennis players and you’ll notice it if you watch closely. When they lose a point or fault on a serve, many players bounce the ball a couple of times. It looks random but it’s not; watch and you’ll notice the pattern they use (two bounces, a short walk to the edge of the court and back).

Another way to adjust your tilt mentality is to think for a few moments about the really bad beats you’ve had in the past. This only works if you’re a relatively experienced player and you’ve had really bad beats, but you may read enough to find a couple of examples from other people about tilts they’ve chased.

1) Analyze tilts that you’ve had…store the big losses so you can look back and improve next time.

2) Watch how other players react to tilts, particularly if you’re new to the game.

3) Remember that about 7% of the time you’re going to lose out in the showdown based on your opponent hitting a three-outer. Even if you win 93% of the time, you still use and the odds are creep closer to 50-50 in most other situations.

4) Be prepared for bad beats…this is much better than reacting to them on the fly!

Basically, if you through caution to the wind and start chasing the pot, you’re going to lose big time.

Tilts do not begin until you have begun actually betting stupidly, so you can avoid further losses while they have not yet been exacerbated by avoiding blind, emotional betting. The best way to do that is by a change of mindset from, “Get back those chips” to “Enough chips have been lost already”.

The second statement is the best frame of mind to have after a big loss (or several smaller ones in succession) because it makes for some good damage control. Sure, you do not get to regain what you lost in the previous rounds, but at least your losses end there.

Even if you buy your way back to a table, there are still odds against your winning back the chips, and emotional betting only worsens those odds. If you simply cannot stop yourself from playing, at least change casinos (if playing online) as a change of scenery and dealers may be all you need.

Stand up and walk away from the blackjack table, digital or real. Read a book, watch some television, or take a walk. Do something else to take your mind off the game and then come back to formulate a recovery strategy once you are calmer and more rational.

Crying and getting mad over spilt milk is foolish enough, let alone actually attempting to lap up further losses and reaching a point of no return with your bankroll. Tilt must always be at the back of your mind when playing, and must be avoided at all costs, otherwise your bankroll will suffer.

How do we tilt in the right way?

Tilt with the weightlifter method (see pictures at http://www.stress-free.org/Tilting-in-the-right-way.html)

• Put your feet next to the object you want to tilt;

• Keep your back straight (tighten belly and buttock muscles and look straight

forward) and go down by bending your knees.

• Take the object in your hands and tilt from the legs by stretching the legs

(don’t tilt with your back!). This because leg muscles are much stronger than

back muscles.

• Keep the object close to your body

When you’re tilting you need to mind the following:

• The 3 second rule. That means that you take the object in your hands and

count to three and then you tilt. Studies show that fast tilting puts about 1,5

times more load on your back than slow tilting

• Judge the weight of the object before tilting to avoid balance problems;

• If possible, divide the weight, for example over two buckets instead of one;

• Divide the weight in a few stages. For example by first tilting it on the chair

and then on the table;

• Use where needed objects that can help you tilting.

When tilting things from the floor you often take the wrong position, you bend over

too much. Even by grabbing a pen off the floor, there’s more than 150 kilos of load

pressuring your cervical disc.

Use the finder technique to take little things off the floor (like a pen). When you take

it swing the opposite leg as a contra weight backwards (mind the space behind you)

The World Series of Poker (WSOP) is the largest set of poker tournaments in the world. It is held annually in Las Vegas, and since 2007 has consisted of 55 events, of which all but the “Main Event” are finished in just over a month.
The winner of each event wins a World Series of Poker bracelet and a prize based on the number of entrants. Most of the major poker variants are featured, though in recent years over half of the events have been variants of Texas hold ‘em.

There has been a lot of talk over the past few years about the so-called stack and tilt golf swing. Apparently about two dozen PGA Tour players have adopted it, including some champions like Rick Weir and Zach Johnson, as well as Aussie Aaron Baddeley, among others. This article will explain where the terms stack and tilt come from and what is going on with this approach to the golf swing.

So What’s With “Stack and Tilt”?

It is really a catchy little phrase that has worked well for the people who promote and teach it. If you are like I was, you are asking yourself, “what is stacking and what is tilting”? Well, here’s an explanation I found while viewing some videos in trying to search for an answer. And by the way the answer is not obvious, in case you are wondering why you can’t figure it out for yourself.

Here’s the deal- the stack and tilt golf swing basically says that most of the golfer’s weight should be kept on his left side during the swing (about 60%), and also that the player’s head should remain pretty much in the same position throughout the swing rather than swaying backwards. His left side should not move backwards much during the backswing but should stay pretty much in the same position it was during set up. In addition, his swing is a bit more upright than flat.

So what does that have to do with stack and tilt? Not much, but here’s the explanation I found. When the golfer has completed his backswing using the guidelines mentioned, his shoulders are vertically in line with each other approximately over his left hip. So his shoulders are said to be “stacked” at that point. (All discussion in this article refers to a right handed player, so lefties just need to reverse things.) Also, at this point the golfer’s back is more or less facing the target, and if his head has been kept in the same place it was at the start of the swing, his spine will necessarily “tilt”.

So there you have it, stack and tilt. If you think that explanation is a bit obscure, I couldn’t agree more, but then again, who cares? It is a catchy little phrase, and the fact that this swing has been adopted by some of the PGA Tour’s top players means that it must be bringing something to the party. Let’s discuss now why this approach has been adopted and if it should be used by weekend golfers like you and me.

Why Players Go to the Stack and Tilt

A lot of swing instructors teach that during the backswing it is OK for the head to move backwards a bit, or sway, especially for the driver. Some of these teachers even advocate keeping the head behind the ball to generate more power. The problem with this approach is that sometimes a player cannot fully transfer his weight to the left side at impact, and the club strikes the ball with the face open. Obviously this means a pushed shot to the right. All this is true with the other clubs in the bag as well, not just the driver. So if you are a player who seems to consistently push shots off to the right, this approach might be worth a try.

Who Should Not Use the Stack and Tilt?

As we all know, some recreational golfers don’t have the prettiest or the most effective swings (to put it in the form of understatement). Some in fact keep way too much of their body weight on the left side as it is. So here you have some players that already have too much weight on the left side and who cannot get through the ball squarely at impact. Trying to exaggerate this even more will not help those golfers. So you have to be aware of your weight distribution at set-up, how squarely you get through the ball, and whether you are prone to pushing shots.

Give it a Shot

So if you are in fact a golfer that has a problem with pushing a lot of shots, it is easy to give this swing approach a try. Don’t worry about “stacking” and “tilting”, just address the ball with about 60% of your weight on your left side. Imagine there is a stick or something touching your left hip at address. Keep you left side touching that stick throughout the swing, and you have just tried the stack and tilt. Think about not moving your head backward during the backswing, and this will help. Try it on the range first, of course, and develop a little muscle memory. Despite the name, the stack and tilt is not a big mystery and is easy to try.

One last word, there a lot of short videos on YouTube which discuss the stack and tilt golf swing. They are worth a look if you want to pursue this.

Lastly, if you stop your gambling habit now, you will save hundred to thousand of dollars per year. Even if your gambling is just a bad habit, and had not progressed to a gambling problem , you will still save a lot of money. If you add up how much money you have spent on your gambling in the past year, it may be a lot more money than you thought!

As stated previously, having a gambling habit does not necessarily mean that you have a compulsive gambling problem. It does, however, indicate that you are more at risk for developing an addiction to gambling. If you stop gambling now, you will see various areas of your life start to improve significantly.
